TChan's BLOG Moving to UBC!

Hello everyone :)

I've just begun my first year at the University of British Columbia, in the Faculty of Arts. It's an incredible but exhausting experience so far!

As I am part of the UBC Blog Squad, I'll be blogging a lot of my experiences from University and just life in general over on my new blog at UBC. I won't be posting here has frequently during the first few years I'll be at UBC.

But anyways, if you want to check out my UBC blog, here's the link!

The Curtain Closes on Godspell

There is a certain, indescribable excitement in praying on the empty scaffolding of the set in the darkness, the chatter of the audience roaring in front of you - a simple layer of cloth separating the two. There is a certain excitement in hearing the comforting house music washing over you, and wishing every cast member to "break a leg" in the rush and hustle of a night as months of rehearsal come to fruition.

There is the certain excitement in hearing the curtain reel slowly open as the opening bars of "Prepare Ye" sound above you on the speaker system. There is a certain excitement in feeling the warmth of the stage lights bathe you as they slowly fade into existence. And there is a certain excitement in looking out into the audience that first time, not knowing what to expect, and they themselves not knowing what to expect. Vancouver College's Godspell run has begun.

I've experienced everything mentioned above a total of eight times in the eight shows we've done this past week. And now looking back, I simply can't believe how lucky I was to get such an opportunity to perform next to so many super-talented, genuinely nice people. The cast of Godspell has become my family over the hard and gruelling process the past couple months. We've become close and we've helped each other through trials and through some rehearsals that just never seem to end. We've laughed, joked, bonded, experienced, shared, trusted, hoped. And as of yesterday night, we've cried together.

The experience of performing on a stage is certainly indescribable unless it's experienced first hand. What a complete dream come true this entire experience was - long have I dreamed to perform on that Vancouver College stage, and after five years of longing, that beautiful dream has come true. I've experienced emotions beyond anything I've experienced before, an excitement, a hope, a love. The set, with all its shaky wood, rusty metal bars, and stray pieces of wood, feathers, glitter on the wooden temporary flooring... has become my home away from home. In a couple weeks, inevitably, the set will be torn down and the stage will once again return to the black, blank stage it was a couple months ago... waiting for the next adventure, waiting to be dressed again for the next production next year. In a way, the past productions have each left their mark on the stage - the beautiful New York skyline is still vaguely present on the back wall of the stage from the tape being removed after West Side Story; the floors are still scratched from Grease; the pews from Guys and Dolls live on in Godspell, and maybe in the future, traces of feathers from "Turn Back, O Man" and glitter from "God Save the People" will still be present in the change rooms, under the seats in the front row, hidden in the corners of the stage.

I'm going to miss this place. And I'm going to miss this family I've made with the Godspell cast - each of us backing each other up, sharing our experiences, dreaming together, laughing together, hoping together. I feel like the luckiest guy on earth to be able to be part of something this amazing.

The curtains have closed on VC-LFA-St.Pat's Godspell the final time last night... but hopefully our hopes and dreams in Godspell live on through the hearts of all who saw the musical this past week.

In the words of the Core Cast... LOVE IS ALL YOU NEEEEEED.
